Marathon Mondays: “Ascension”

When I first saw the title on Netflix, the trailer made the miniseries seem like a more contemporary, more dystopian version of “Star Trek,” or as if “Star Trek” collaborated with “The 100”. However, while I appreciated the aesthetic of the series, which blends modern with mid-century, I couldn’t get past the clunky dialogue and blase nature of the plot. I hoped the series would create more of a commentary on humanity’s transpiring future when vanity, greed and pride are allowed to go unchecked. On the other hand, it didn’t necessarily seem to do any of those things, and while I would watch the series again, if only to double-check my review, I was pretty disappointed that what could have been a promising series, wasn’t at all.

Film Fridays: “Captive State”

Scheduled for theaters on the 15th of March 2019, this film’s premise, as presented through its trailer, was a bit of a surprise to me, since while it’s shown to be almost like another “Independence Day”-kind of alien film, the fact that there’s a divide between those working with the aliens on Earth, and those attempting to rebel against those same collaborators, is pretty refreshing, since it provides a different look at how “Earthlings” would approach sentient life from another planet.

Thanksgiving Thursdays: “Firefly” Re-look

On the topic of space colonies, I have to think back to the 2002 Joss Whedon series “Firefly,” however short-lived. This series (which you can now find on Hulu), follows the adventures of “space pirates,” who aesthetically seem more like cowboys. What I liked about this series was how it was almost impossible to place it into a particular genre. Was it science fiction because of its setting? Or was it more of a western because of the “new frontier”? Although I doubt there will be another installation of this series any time soon, luckily the canon is being expanded into a series of books, the first having come out in 2018, and the next two coming out in 2019.

Since the launch trailer in December 2018, and the gameplay trailer launched soon thereafter, fans of Obsidian Studios’ “The Outer Worlds” have been waiting for new information on this fps allows the player to determine the fate of a corporate-run space colony. Next month, the magazine, Gameinformer, will focusing on this title in their March issue. So far, they’ve only released a short interview with the studio on gameplay details, but hopefully more will come out about the story as the month goes on, especially in terms of who this colony is being run by specifically, and what the futures of the colony are determined by.
